Tio tips

Vandring Höga Kusten

We know that travelling to the High Coast is often a long journey. That's why we have gathered tips on conscious choices you can make on the way here and when you are there. Together we create a responsible and sustainable destination.

Welcome to tread carefully on the green paths of the High Coast!

1. Review your transport options

If you are travelling within Sweden or from neighbouring countries, consider whether you can travel by bus or train - or a combination. Once there, you can also travel by public transport to much of your destination. If you rent a car, consider choosing an electric car.

2. Stay longer

From an emissions perspective, it is better to make fewer trips over more days than to travel frequently over a long weekend. You don't need to have fewer travelling days in total - just think about how you use them. The longer you stay in the High Coast, the more you can experience and contribute to the local economy.

3. Choose sustainability labelling

Next time you're looking for accommodation, products or activities, check if they have a sustainability programme. There are several operators who have worked hard to offer you a Nordic Swan Ecolabelled, GreenKey, Organic or Nature's Best certified product, for example.

4. Eat local and home-grown

Eating food that is local and in season is better for both you and the environment. Visit some of the many flavoursome producers in the High Coast and contribute to the local economy. When the High Coast is thriving, it's also more fun to come back!

5. Choose what lasts

Choose local events, visit our museums and shop for products that make memories. There are plenty of genuine products and stories, created with care. There are also plenty of flea markets and second-hand shops where you can find things with history.

6. Leave no trace

Sweden's recycling system is world-class. When you sort your waste, it becomes raw material for something else. Pack up all your rubbish and don't leave anything behind in nature. All our InfoPoints have rubbish bags that you can use.

7. Drink tap water

The tap water in the High Coast tastes fantastic. So always have a bottle with you that you can fill with water instead of buying it. Our restaurants also serve tap water and several are affiliated to the voluntary Swedish Kranmärkt label.

8. Get to know others

We like genuine encounters and are happy to make time for others. Remember that a smile works wonders, as does saying hello. If you want to take photos of people you meet, please ask them first.

9. Choose nature tourism activities

Canoeing, kayaking, cycling, cross-country skiing and ice skating are fun nature tourism activities that allow you to discover a large area without carbon emissions. In our dramatic nature, they also provide good exercise. Make sure you are on sites and trails where the activity is authorised and appropriate.

10. Come outside the high season

Perhaps you can travel outside the peak season of June-August? This usually means more space and you also help the economy and jobs in the area. Nature trails also have more time to recover if we spread out over the year.
