Beschreibung

The cliffs here are barren and rise sharply out of the sea, with the lighthouse sitting like a jewel in a crown. The lighthouse keepers’ cottages are used as a hostel today. You can get here by ferry from either Bönhamn or Barsta.

Högbonden is a nature reserve so there are quite a few trails you can hike. Directly south of the lighthouse are caves in the cliffs that have taken 500 years to form.

Interesting facts on Högbonden’s lighthouse include that in 1909, the island had a staff of three to run the lighthouse. At its peak, 21 people lived on the island, and there was even a schoolroom in the attic. From 1952, the lighthouse keeper lived on the island alone until the lighthouse was fully automated eleven years later.
